The 2026 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was abruptly thrown into chaos on April 25 after an armed man allegedly breached a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials.
The incident unfolded shortly after the annual dinner began, as roughly 2,600 journalists, government officials, political figures and invited guests gathered inside the hotel for one of Washington’s most prominent media and political events. According to federal authorities and accounts from witnesses, loud bangs were heard near the ballroom before the armed suspect attempted to move toward the area where Trump and other senior officials were seated. The suspect was identified by authorities as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Federal prosecutors allege that Allen was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and a .38-caliber handgun when he rushed through a Secret Service security checkpoint near the ballroom. Investigators later said he had also possessed knives.
The gunfire triggered an immediate protective response. Secret Service agents moved Trump away from the stage as heavily armed officers entered the ballroom and guests took cover. Melania Trump, Vice President Vance and other senior administration officials were also evacuated from the area. Trump was not injured. The agent was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later reported to have been released. Allen was also taken into custody after the confrontation. No fatalities were reported.

A federal grand jury subsequently returned a four-count indictment on May 5. The indictment added a charge of assaulting a federal officer or employee with a deadly weapon. Allen has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors have alleged that the attack was planned in advance. Court documents say Allen had reserved a room at the Washington Hilton weeks before the dinner and traveled from California to Washington before the event. Investigators have also cited writings and communications that they say indicated an intention to target senior administration officials. Those allegations remain part of the criminal case and have not been established as facts at trial.
